Manchester United are reportedly exploring options to bolster their goalkeeping department, with Napoli’s Alex Meret and Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson emerging as potential targets.
United is facing a goalkeeping crisis, with Altay Bayindir reportedly seeking a move away from the club due to a lack of playing time. The Turkish goalkeeper, who joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2023, has made just three appearances for the club, and it seems that his time at Old Trafford may be coming to an end.
With Bayindir’s departure looming, Manchester United is on the hunt for a new goalkeeper to provide competition for first-choice Andre Onana. According to reports, the club is interested in signing two goalkeepers: Alex Meret of Napoli and Anthony Patterson of Sunderland.
Alex Meret: A Free Transfer Option
Meret, 27, is out of contract at the end of the season, and Manchester United is hoping to snap him up on a free transfer. The Italian goalkeeper has been with Napoli since 2018 and has helped the club win the Serie A title. However, Inter Milan is also interested in signing Meret, which could lead to a battle for his signature.
Anthony Patterson: A £20m Target
Patterson, 24, is a highly-rated goalkeeper who has been in fine form for Sunderland this season. The Black Cats are currently fourth in the Championship, and Patterson has been instrumental in their push for promotion. Manchester United is reportedly willing to pay £20m for the goalkeeper, but Tottenham is also interested in signing him, which could drive up the price.
Tom Heaton: A Veteran Option
While Manchester United is searching for a new goalkeeper, Tom Heaton remains an option for the club. The 38-year-old goalkeeper has been with the Red Devils since 2021, but he has made just three competitive appearances for the club. Heaton’s age and lack of playing time may make him a less appealing option, but he could still provide cover for Onana if needed.

Altay Bayindir
Bayindir’s Unsettled Future
The interest in new goalkeepers stems from the dissatisfaction of current backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. The Turkish international has struggled to secure regular playing time behind Andre Onana and is considering a move away from Old Trafford in January.
While signing a young and promising goalkeeper like Patterson could be a long-term investment, it also carries risks. If Patterson fails to adapt to the demands of Premier League football, United could find themselves in a difficult situation.
Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation is uncertain, with Bayindir’s departure looming and the search for a new goalkeeper underway. Meret and Patterson are two promising options, but the club will need to act quickly to secure their signatures. With the January transfer window approaching, it will be interesting to see how Manchester United addresses its goalkeeping conundrum.
What is your thought on United possible target for the replacement of Altay Bayindir, do you think it is the right decision?
