Manchester United Agree Deal to Sign Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Bayern Munich to sign centre-back Matthijs de Ligt in a deal worth €45million, plus €5m in add-ons. The 24-year-old Netherlands international will join United on a five-year contract that includes the option to extend by an additional 12 months.

The transfer is subject to De Ligt passing a medical, and personal terms are not expected to be a problem since it has been agreed upon a month ago. The move will reunite De Ligt with manager Erik ten Hag, who oversaw Ajax’s run to the 2018/19 Champions League semi-finals during which the 24-year-old impressed in central defence.

De Ligt’s Career

De Ligt has had a successful career so far, playing for Ajax, Juventus, and Bayern Munich. He has won several titles, including the Eredivisie, Serie A, and Coppa Italia. He has also been capped by the Netherlands national team and has played in the Champions League.

What De Ligt Brings to Manchester United

De Ligt is a right-footed right centre-back who should fit in perfectly alongside the left-footed, left-sided Lisandro Martinez. He is an astute passer and recorded 93.9% completion on 77.50 attempts per 90 minutes last season, including an excellent 76.9% on 7.86 long balls per 90. He can play crossfield passes to spread the opposition out.

Manchester United have made a significant statement of intent by securing a deal for Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt. The reunion with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is undoubtedly a key factor in this move.

De Ligt’s Injury Record

De Ligt has had his injury issues in recent years, but he has missed only 27 matches for club and country because of them over the past three seasons, the same as Harry Maguire and fewer than the latter’s fellow United centre-backs Victor Lindelof (31) and Martinez (67).

Filling the Defensive Void

With injuries plaguing United’s backline last season and into the new campaign, the acquisition of De Ligt is a strategic move to bolster their defensive options. His experience, leadership, and ability to build play from the back can potentially transform United’s defensive solidity.

The Potential Impact on Manchester United’s Style of Play

The arrival of De Ligt could signal a change in style for Manchester United. Ten Hag has previously stated that he wants to play a more direct style of football, but De Ligt’s passing ability and vision could allow United to play a more possession-based, fluid style of play.

Ten Hag’s preference for possession-based football might find a more suitable platform with De Ligt’s passing range and ability to initiate attacks from deep.

Questions Remain

While De Ligt’s arrival is undoubtedly positive, questions remain about his consistency and whether he can rediscover his best form under Ten Hag. Additionally, the club’s pursuit of Noussair Mazraoui suggests a potential overhaul of the defensive line.

Regardless of the challenges ahead, Manchester United’s pursuit of De Ligt is a clear indication of their ambition to return to the top of English football. The reunion with Ten Hag and the addition of a player of De Ligt’s caliber sends a strong message to both domestic and European rivals.

What’s Next for Manchester United?

The signing of De Ligt is a significant boost for Manchester United, and it could be the start of a successful season. The Red Devils will be looking to challenge for the Premier League title and make a deep run in the Champions League.
