Manchester United have agreed a fee with Bayern Munich to sign Moroccan international Noussair Mazraoui in a deal worth £17.2m, with a potential exit of Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham to finance the transfer.
The transfer fee is made up of an initial £12.9m, plus performance-related add-ons worth £4.3m. West Ham had previously agreed a £16.5m deal for Mazraoui, but the move broke down, with the Hammers shifting their attention to Wan-Bissaka.
The move will see Erik ten Hag reunite with a player he previously managed at Ajax.
Why Manchester United Want Mazraoui
Erik ten Hag coached Mazraoui at Ajax and believes the 26-year-old can aid Antony’s form. Mazraoui supported the Brazilian on the Dutch club’s right flank during their title-winning seasons of 2020-21 and 2021-2022, and they impressed as a pairing.
Mazraoui’s arrival will provide a much-needed boost to Manchester United’s right-back options. The Moroccan international impressed under Ten Hag at Ajax, forming a formidable partnership with Antony.
Manchester United’s Defensive Options
Manchester United are short of defensive options after the injury to Leny Yoro, and the signing of Mazraoui will provide a much-needed boost. However, the Red Devils may still look to sign another defender, with Matthijs de Ligt reportedly close to United with reports of a deal agreed upon.
While the focus is on strengthening the right side of the defense, concerns persist at left-back. With Luke Shaw’s injury record and Tyrell Malacia’s ongoing rehabilitation, United may explore options in that position as well.
What’s Next for United
Manchester United are on the cusp of a defensive overhaul. The impending arrival of Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich signals a significant step in Erik ten Hag’s squad reshaping. The Moroccan full-back, a proven performer under the Dutchman at Ajax, is set to bolster United’s right-back options.
Ten Hag’s tactical blueprint is becoming increasingly clear. With Raphael Varane’s departure, the signing of Matthijs de Ligt addressed a central defensive void. Now, the right-back position is being fortified. This strategic approach suggests a potential shift in United’s style of play, with a greater emphasis on possession and attacking flair.
The coming weeks will be pivotal for Manchester United as they look to finalize their squad for the upcoming season. With a new-look defense taking shape, the Red Devils will be aiming to challenge for domestic and European honours.
