Player Ratings and Tactical analysis as Manchester City defeats Manchester United to win the Community Shield final

Manchester City defeats Manchester United on penalties to win the community Shield after a fierce battle between both teams. The match started off to a great start by both teams at 14:00 UK time and quickly became a spectacle for both teams to watch.

Tactical Analysis of Manchester United against Manchester City

Erik Ten Hag lined up a competitive team against Manchester City although it might be a little bit questioned as he played Lisandro Martinez as a left back compared to his usual position of Left back or Central Defensive Midfielder. Erik Ten Hag started with a 4 4 2 formation playing Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo up front. Manchester City featured a mixture of starters like Erling Haaland and Gvardiol while also starting with players like Rico Lewis and O’Reilly.

 

Despite a goal less first half, Manchester United got off to a great start in the second half  with a lovely goal at the 82nd minute after he was brought on as a substitute by Manchester United coaching team bringing the question of whether he should have started the game for United. Erik Ten Hag removed Rashford and replaced him with Jason Sancho right after the goal in the 83rd minute.

Manchester United panicked against Manchester City to concede late goal

Despite scoring the first goal late into the match, Manchester United was only able to keep the lead for 7 minutes before Bernando Silva scores a header in the 89th minute after a precise delivery from Oscar Bobb. Both teams were given 5 minutes to turn the game around but despite intense attacking from both ends, neither team was able to put the ball at the back of the net.

Manchester United lose in the penalty Shootout

Due to the regulations and guidelines of the Community Shield, the match proceeded to be a penalty shootout with both teams looking to settle the score. After a coin toss, it was decided Manchester United will go first. Marcus Rashford went first and scored while Bernando Silva’s penalty was saved by Andre Onana. Manchester United was able to keep the penalty lead until the last penalty which was taken by Sancho who bottles it and Ederson Moreas saved the ball to the woodwork. Manchester United players kept their composure regardless and was able to drag the game for longer as Casemiro, ScottMcTominay and Lisandro Martinez all scoring their penalties. Johnny Evans skies his penalty and sends the ball to the stands meanwhile Manchester City Manuel Akanji scores his to win the Community Shield for Manchester City.

Manchester United take Community Shield positives with mixed feelings

The match featured a lot of takeaway and positives for Manchester United as they approach the start of a new Premier league season next weekend. Players like Holjund, Luke Shaw and the new signing, Leny Yoro could not participate in the match indicating Manchester United could be very much better and with the addition of a new signing like Mattijs De Ligt, Manchester United’s defence should be very much better compared to last season’s. Another positive was the improvement of Casemiro who has recently come under fire for some of his performances. Garnacho’s performance was also one to take in.

Andre Onana – 7. Andre Onana put on a good shift today especially with him saving Bernando Silva’s penalty which could have given Manchester United the momentum they needed.

Harry Maguire – 7. Former Captain, Harry Maguire did not give his critics something to talk about after giving a solid performance against Manchester City.

Diogo Dalot – 6. Dalot put on a fair performance against Manchester City with most of his crosses not reaching where was intended of it.

Johnny Evans – 5.5. Johnny Evans started as a Center back against City and had a fair game until he missed the last penalty kick which gave Manchester City the Community Shield

Lisandro Martinez – 6. Was played out of position and had a quiet game.

Mason Mount – 6.5. Mount’s performances recently are getting better and it shows against today but he definitely needs to turn on the gear this season.

Casemiro – 7.5. Casemiro did everything right today including his penalty and he’s one of the players that can say he has been let down by the loss.

Mainoo – 6.5. It is Mainoo first game back from international break and he was solid. Not special highlights but he wasn’t bad either.

Amad Diallo – 6.5. He had a mixed match with him showcasing a lot of talents and sometimes he wasn’t up to his standard. He created a play in the first half that nearly needed to a goal but the other striker was not ready to react.

Bruno Fernandes – 7. The captain anchored the team today scoring a goal with a lovely finish which was later ruled out for offside.

Marcus Rashford – 6.5. Rashford needs to step things up this season if he wants to be Manchester United starman. Not a bad game but definitely not a good one either.

Alejandro Garnacho -7. Scored Manchester United only goal of the match. Electric performance.
