Manchester United has finally confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, marking the beginning of a new era at Old Trafford. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach has signed an initial contract until 2027 and will take up his position on November 11, after completing his current commitments with Sporting Lisbon.
Three Clues About Manchester United’s Future
In his first press conference since the announcement, Amorim revealed three key things about the club’s future, giving supporters a glimpse into his vision for the team.
Committed to the Long-Term
Amorim is committed to the long-term success of Manchester United, having turned down other opportunities to join the club. He explained that he was approached by Manchester United during the season, and despite wanting to stay with Sporting Lisbon until the end of the season, he was told it was now or never. This conviction in committing to a move to Old Trafford is a clear sign that United’s offer is one he has been waiting for.
“The season started, we started very well, and then Manchester United came, they pay above the compensation clause and the president defends the club’s interests,” Amorim explained. “I never discussed anything with the president. For three days, I said I wanted to stay until the end of the season, but then I was told it was not possible. It was now or never or Manchester would go for another option. So, I had three days to make my mind up, to make a decision that changes radically my life.”
Doing Things His Own Way
Amorim also hinted that his new role gives him the remit to do things his own way, which could be an indication of the style he intends to adopt at the club. The Portuguese coach is known for his intense possession-based 3-4-3 system, which could suit United’s current crop of players well once they get used to it.
“I’ve had other opportunities – the president and [director of football] Hugo Viana can confirm this. It is not the first or the second time that I have been requested by another team and I do not want another team,” said Amorim. “After Sporting I wanted that one, Manchester [United] – and I want that context, because that context allows me to do things my way and the club [in] believes me that way.”
No Raid on Sporting Lisbon
Amorim confirmed that he does not intend to raid Sporting Lisbon of their current players in January, giving United fans a clue into what his first transfer window could look like – at least for now.
“[Viktor] Gyokeres costs €100 million, and it’s very difficult,” added Amorim to the media. “I’m not going to pick up any Sporting player in January.”
A Major Transfer Hint
Despite Amorim’s statement, a report from The Sun claims that he is determined to sign Ousmane Diomande, a centre-back from Sporting Lisbon, in the January transfer window. Diomande has a £70m release clause in his contract and has been linked with several top European clubs, including Liverpool and Arsenal.
“The formation has served him well in Portugal, and he thinks it can help deliver success at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have three top-quality centre-back options to ensure Amorim can implement his favoured three-man backline, once Leny Yoro returns to fitness,” the report states. “A centre-back trio of Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez provides the balance at the back. But United lack quality options in reserve, with Harry Maguire unlikely to be at the club for much longer. Victor Lindelof has long been linked with an exit, and, at 36, Jonny Evans won’t be around forever.”
What to Expect from Amorim’s Manchester United
With Amorim’s appointment, Manchester United supporters can expect a new era of possession-based football, with a focus on developing the current squad and bringing in new signings to strengthen the team. Amorim’s commitment to the long-term success of the club is a promising sign, and his willingness to do things his own way could lead to an exciting new chapter in the club’s history.
